Hyderabad, July 17: The Hyderabad Police on Friday launched Project Safe Stay, a new initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and security of women residing in hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations across the city.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar and GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan unveiled the Suraksha Nivaas 1.0 guidelines brochure at the TGICCC Auditorium in Banjara Hills. They held a meeting with hostel and PG management to discuss implementing mandatory safety standards.

Sajjanar announced that registration of all women’s hostels and PG accommodations with the local police station will now be mandatory under a new regulatory framework. A survey of 47 women’s hostels found that while 97.5% had CCTV cameras, only 43% had proper compound walls and just 38.9% were equipped with fire safety equipment, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.

He clarified that the new guidelines are intended to establish minimum safety standards rather than impose additional restrictions. A dedicated mobile app for women’s hostel safety will also be launched soon.

Hyderabad Police Taking Care of Women in Hostels

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan directed hostel operators to obtain mandatory trade licences and FSSAI licences where food is served, maintain proper visitor and resident records, conduct background verification of staff and ensure CCTV systems remain fully functional.

Fire Department officials stressed the need for emergency exits, fire extinguishers and basic firefighting infrastructure, while Food Safety officials warned of strict action against violations of food safety norms.

The initiative has been launched jointly by the Hyderabad City Police, Hyderabad City Security Council (HCSC) and United Way of Hyderabad to ensure safer accommodation for women and girl students coming to the city for education and employment.
