Hyderabad, July 13: Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha on Monday directed officials to strengthen Unani healthcare services and ensure that quality treatment is accessible to people across the state.

Reviewing the performance of the AYUSH Department at the Secretariat, the Minister assessed the functioning of the Government Nizamia Tibbi College and Nizamia General Hospital, medical services, infrastructure, ongoing construction works, and future development plans.

The Telangana Health Minister described the Government Nizamia Tibbi College and Nizamia General Hospital in Hyderabad as premier institutions for Unani medicine in Telangana and said the government is committed to their development. He instructed the TGMIDC Chief Engineer to expedite the construction of the new OP Block and Pharmacy Building and complete the works by January 2027 for public use.

Damodar Rajanarasimha also directed the Principal Secretary of the Health Department to immediately prepare proposals for filling vacant posts of doctors, teaching faculty, and other staff to ensure uninterrupted medical services and academic activities. He further instructed officials to ensure adequate availability of medicines, medical equipment, and infrastructure in Unani dispensaries and hospitals across the state.

AYUSH Director Srikant Babu informed the Telangana Health Minister that the recruitment of 138 Assistant Professors last year had significantly addressed the shortage of doctors in AYUSH institutions. He also said the government had sanctioned ₹52.50 crore for the restoration of the heritage buildings of Nizamia Tibbi College and Nizamia General Hospital, as well as the construction of new facilities. Officials added that the procurement and distribution of essential Unani medicines is continuing.

The Minister also reviewed key issues faced by the department and directed officials to expedite the proposal for establishing a State-level Unani Drug Manufacturing Unit. He further instructed them to resolve issues related to the Government Unani Dispensary building at Moulali and ensure that Unani medical services there continue without disruption.

The review meeting was attended by Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali, Health Department Principal Secretary Dr Christina Z. Chongthu AYUSH Director Srikant Babu, the Superintendent of Nizamia Tibbi Hospital, and other senior officials.
